WoRMS starring in season 3 of the LifeWatch ERIC podcast
The first of a new LifeWatch ERIC podcast series launched today, 20 July 2022, focuses on the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) and the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) database.
Taxonomy and beyond: ecological trait information in Aphia and WoRMS
In recent years, the WoRMS editors and Data Management Team have made collective efforts towards documenting the following species traits information in Aphia and WoRMS: environment (99,5% complete), functional group (76% complete), qualitative (45% complete) and quantitative body size (9% complete) (percentages are for accepted species in Aphia). The availability of these traits greatly enhances the usability and utility of WoRMS towards ecologists and the public at large.

As for previous years, the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) has again released its annual list of the top-ten marine species described by researchers during the past year to coincide with World Taxonomist Appreciation Day on March 19th!
Porifera editors participated in the very first online organised WoRMS-LifeWatch editor workshop
In the week of June 7th 2021, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) – host of Aphia, the online platform behind WoRMS and its many sub-registered – organized the very first online editor workshop, in which 13 Porifera-editors enthusiastically participated.
World Strepsiptera Database launched!
A world list of Strepsiptera – twisted-wing parasitoids – is now accessible through their very own portal, as part of Aphia, the platform behind the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). The World Strepsiptera Database currently contains 605 accepted species, and will be updated to catch up with newly described species in the last 5 years.
Awardees for the 2021 WoRMS Achievement & Early Career Researchers Award known
This year, the WoRMS Achievement Award goes to Chad Walter, and the WoRMS Early Career Researchers Award was granted to Ralf Cordeiro.
