On April 15th and 16th, a two-day FixO3 workshop “An introduction and practical use of European marine data infrastructures” was organized in Bremen.

The target audience of this workshop were “less experienced users of data”, such as PhD students and early career scientists.

The workshop covered three main topics:
  • How to obtain data from existing European marine data infrastructures (e.g. EMODNet, MyOcean, PANGAEA, EurOBIS, ICES, SeaDataNet, EuroGOOS, LifeWatch)?
  • How to use available tools to aggregate, harmonize, and transform data (e.g. the World Register of Marine Species, Ocean Data View, MATLAB, etc.)?
  • What is the importance of metadata and property rights?
During this workshop, the data services and use cases of the Belgian LifeWatch e-Lab were demonstrated. This yielded about 20 new registered users for the LifeWatch data services. Also the EMODnet Biology Data Portal was used extensively during this hands-on workshop.
