Abstract
In studies of the cheilostomate fauna of the Straits of Gibraltar, areas of overlap have been detected in the geographical distributions of Atlantic and Mediterranean species, and tropical and temperate species In order to quantify the similarities the fauna has been compared with a number of catalogues currently available for adjacent areas, from the British Isles to the Gulf of Guinea and the western Mediterranean Data are still insufficient to give abundances, so comparison is made only on the basis of numbers of species present. Two indices are used for each comparison, the Jaccard index and the Simpson index, and some observed differences in the results are analysed in relation to the characteristics of each index In general, the fauna displays an equal similarity with those of the Mediterranean and Atlantic, but along the latitudinal axis similarity was greater with the European fauna than with that of West Africa Species reported for the Straits of Gibraltar are classified in distributional groups.
