Abstract |
This paper examines our current knowledge concerning the taxonomic and evolutionary relationships of species within the genus based on biochemical, physiological, cytological and morphometric data and stresses the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for the characterization of Mytilus worldwide. Particular attention is focussed on the systematic status of M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, a 'species' originally thought to be restricted to the Mediterranean and parts of NW Europe but which now appears to be more widely distributed, having recently been reported from Japan, Hong Kong, California and South Africa. |
