Abstract
Empidid flies are predators and nectar-feeders. In the Flemish coastal area, 94 species were found, representing more than one third of all species recorded to date in Flanders. Of these, 14 species are dune-specific and are included on the Flemish red list. Habitats of the specific dune species are the upper beach zone, salt marshes, dune slacks and grey dunes. Within the Flemish region, 10 of these species occur exclusively along the coast. Many species have probably a [temporal or permanent] refuge in moist scrub. Conservation of these habitats is thus of primordial importance for the conservation of the specific empidid fauna.
