Abstract
Aimed at providing scientific support to the environmental policy of the European Community, the environmental research programme addresses short-, mid- and long-term problems. Thus it deals mostly with pollution, its sources, detection, pathways, health and environmental effects, abatement and prevention, but is also increasingly concerned with improving the understanding of ecological processes in aquatic and terrestrial systems. Marine ecotoxicology bas been an important component of the programme since its inception, including studies of metals content and speciation in the sea, remote sensing of pollution, base-line investigations of benthic communities, sea mammals populations in relation to pollution, testing of chemicals, controlled ecosystems techniques, oil pollution, dispersants, etc. Further orientations will stress the preventive aspects of environmental protection.
