Abstract
This is the third report of the Beached Bird Surveys along the Flemish coast. The study was conducted under the authority of the Flemish Agency for Maritime and Coast Affairs (AMDK-AK) and in close cooperation with the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). This report presents the results of the Beached Bird Surveys conducted during the winter 2008/09. Just 149 birds were counted during the BBS last winter, that mains 0.36 birds each investigated kilometre beach. This is almost the lowest rate since the winter 1961/62. the highest densities of beached birds were encountered during December and not like the general pattern in February. Real seabirds as alcids, grebes, divers and scoters were very scarce or almost absent. Gulls were the most dominant group, fitting the trend of last year. Only three birds with oil pollution were found, fitting the trend of a decline of oil pollution since the winter 1961/62.
