Abstract
An in situ study on the growth rate of Tridacnidae on a reef off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea was initiated in 1978. An accurate method for shell measurements is described in detail. Preliminary results on the growth rate of Tridacna gigas (Linnaeus, 1758) and T. squamosa Lamarck, 1819 are presented. Data are given on the growth of two very large specimens of T. gigas surveyed over a period of 10 years and 5 months, and one very large specimen of T. squamosa, surveyed over 13 years and 5 months.
