Abstract
The discovery of seasonal breeding in species of deep-sea echinoderms and bivalves offers the possibility of tracking the growth of age-marked cohorts in a time series. Such an approach has been applied to a long-time series of epibenthic sledge samples obtained from the Rockall Trough (N.E. Atlantic). Methods for the estimation of cohort age-structure from the analysis of modal structure of size-frequency distributions are described. It is shown how the realm of likely solutions may be constrained by prior information from skeletal growth lines. Computer graphics simulations of size structure based on parameters determined from the analysis of size frequencies and other information is shown, by means of examples, to provide a fast and flexible means to test the fit of model age structure to the observed distributions.
