Abstract |
Macoma balthica shells in 'Older-Pleistocene' material at the Netherlands Geological Survey, Haarlem, catalogued by HEERING, have been re-examined. Many shells belong either to Macoma praetenuis (WOODWARD ex LEATHES' MSS, 1833) or to M. obliqua (SOWERBY, 1817), except those from borings at Vlissingen and Biggekerke, where the deposits containing the shells are now known to be Eemian/Holocene. Diagnostic characters of the Macoma shells are discussed. Consequently, when correlating the marine sequencese of the Netherlands and English (East Anglian Crag) Lower Pleistocene, we may now dismiss the supposedoccurrence of a 'Weybournian' horizon in the uppermost marine 'Icenian' of the Netherlands. The resulting simplified situation is expounded. |
