Dag van de Wetenschap 2016

On November 27th 2016, VLIZ celebrated Science Day (Dag van de Wetenschap). For this event, VLIZ opened the doors of its Marine Station Ostend (MSO) and the LifeWatch laboratories for the public at large, for the third year in a row. Two aspects of the Flemish LifeWatch infrastructure were presented: (1) the tagging of fish (European eel and Atlantic cod), where live eels could be admired by the public, and (2) the ongoing phyto-and zooplankton research, with the FlowCam, ZooScan and Video Plankton Recorder on display.

EMODnet Biology Marine Traits Workshop

This one day workshop held at VLIZ was the last workshop in a series of meetings organized within the second phase of the biological component of the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). This project aims at linking taxonomic information with biological and ecological traits related to marine species. During the previous workshops the rationale, prioritization and methodology to reach the common goal of a standardized database of Marine traits were set up.

Alien Challenge workshop

This workshop was organized by the COST action Alien Challenge and gathered invasive alien species database managers, data users, data generators and biodiversity informatics specialists, with representatives from sixteen European countries and one from the United States. The workshop focused on data needs and requirements, existing data sources and data standards for four main invasive alien species themes.
