Abstract
A taxonomic study of Indonesian reef sponge faunas has been carried out at the Institute of Taxonomic Zoology in Amsterdam. The available specimens originated from the reef flat of four different localities of Eastern Indonesia: Maisel, east of Sumba, north of Sumbawa, and Bahuluang (south-west of the Salayar). A total of 61 species belonging to 28 Families and grouped into 11 Orders are described and fully illustrated. A comparison by using cluster analysis between sponge faunas of exposed ("Maisel"), disturbed (Sumba, Sumbawa) and sheltered reef flats ("Bahuluang") indicate that, there is a high degree of difference in taxonomic composition between these localities. The inverse analysis shows that 11 species are. fairly common in the area, e.g. Spongia irregularis (Lendenfeld,1889), Xestospongia exigua (Kirkpatrick,1900), Haliclona pigmentifera Dendy,1905., Ircinia ramosa (Keller,1889), Hyrtios erectus (Keller,1889), Ecionemia acervus (Bowerbank,1873), Stelletta clavosa Ridley,1884., Pseudaxinella massa (Carter,1887), Cinachyra australiensis (Carter,1886), Iotrochota baculifera Ridley,1884, Spirastrella vagabunda Ridley,1884., and the other species are restricted to one locality or dominant in just a few localities. Detailed taxonomical and ecological descriptions of the sponge species concerned are presented in the text.
