Presentation of the LifeWatch Zooplankton Sample Library and demo at YSD 2014

The LifeWatch Zooplankton Sample Library and its use case were demonstrated at the VLIZ Young Marine Scientists' Day 2014 (March 7th, Bruges, Belgium).As part of the Lifewatch Marine Observatory, a semi-automatic zooplankton recognition tool is used to build a zooplankton sample library. Zooplankton samples are screened for contained taxa and both digital and physical samples are made available for use by the research community.
The ZooSCAN system uses scanner technology with custom lighting and a watertight scanning chamber into which zooplankton samples can be placed. The scanner recovers a high-resolution, digital image and the samples can be recovered without damage. Then, recognition software will annotate and count taxa in your sample in an semi-automated manner.
Its output can be size-related measurements, counts of each taxon and pictures of each specimen. For long term monitoring this tool is very quick and straightforward and all these data will be made accessible through lifewatch.be.
