Description
This dataset is the result of the deployment of a Real Time Video Plankton Recorder in the Belgian Part of the North Sea for multiple sampling campaigns between 2019 and 2021. Data was collected in the framework of the LifeWatch project and a PhD research project on "Optical imaging and analysis for zooplankton observations". The dataset contains a total of 175,000 validated images or regions of interest of plankton and marine particles. more

The images were manually validated by scientists and classified into various classes. The classes include: amphipoda (68), annelida (517), annelida_hairy (3), annelida_tubeworm (36), appendicularia (424), appendicularia_house (4207), blurry (1427), brachyura_zoe (24), branchiopoda (7), bubbles (8063), calanoida (4308), caridea (47), chaetognatha (51), cirripedia_cypris (8), cirripedia_nauplius (29), cnidaria (490), ctenophora (7), ctenophora_body (193), ctenophora_tentacles (44), cumaceae (150), detritus (115249), detritus_flake (2794), echinodermata (1971), fibers (3854), harpacticoida (56), noctiluca (24594), phaeocystis_elongated (2195), phaeocystis_round (663), pisces_egg (5), pisces_larvae (66), polyp (52), porcellanidae (6), rest (592), and unknown (2800). The Video Plankton Recorder utilizes dark-field imaging and captures full frames with a resolution of 1380 x 1034 pixels at a rate of 25 frames per second. The majority of the images were taken using the S1 magnification setting, which offers a field of view measuring 20.8 × 15.2 mm
